A total of 2,977 people were killed, ranging in age from two to 85. Thousands of other people, including first responders and workers who spent months at the disaster sites, were later affected by illnesses linked to exposure to toxic dust, smoke and debris.

Former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama and George W. Bush are expected to attend the New York ceremony, while President Donald Trump is expected to mark the anniversary at the Pentagon.
The anniversary serves as a moment of remembrance for the victims, survivors, first responders and families whose lives were permanently changed by the attacks.
