China’s Xi Jinping Arrives in Egypt for First Visit in a Decade

The visit comes amid major regional instability, including the ongoing Iran war and its impact on energy markets and security across the Middle East. China and Egypt are expected to discuss bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The two countries are also seeking to deepen economic cooperation, with potential agreements covering artificial intelligence, transport, energy, investment and development in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. China has become an increasingly important economic partner for Egypt through infrastructure, manufacturing and other investments.

The visit is particularly significant because Egypt was the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1956.
