Russian Businessman With Putin Ties Helped Fund Donald Trump Jr.’s Bahamas Wedding Celebrations

According to the investigation published on September 14, Kremlev paid for significant expenses during the three-day celebration, including the rental of a private island, accommodation for guests and a fireworks display.

The report was based on records reviewed by ProPublica and interviews with people familiar with the wedding and with Kremlev’s organization, the International Boxing Association, or IBA.

The wedding celebrations took place across two private islands in the Bahamas, with about 50 people attending different parts of the festivities.

Kremlev, who serves as president of the International Boxing Association, was also among the guests and was part of a larger group of Russian nationals who attended the celebrations.

ProPublica reported that payments for some of the expenses were made through an IBA-affiliated entity based in Dubai, while Kremlev’s team also assisted with aspects of planning the event.

The revelation has attracted significant attention because of Kremlev’s reported relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his connections to Russian state-linked institutions.

Kremlev has been a prominent figure in Russian boxing and international sports. He became president of the International Boxing Association in 2020, and the organization has received substantial financial backing from Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom, according to ProPublica.

The report also noted that Putin awarded Kremlev the Order of Friendship, a Russian state honor, in April 2026.

Kremlev’s representatives, however, have disputed some descriptions of his relationship with the Russian government.

His press office described him as a businessman and philanthropist and said Kremlev and Trump Jr. have a friendly relationship.

The representatives also said Kremlev had never discussed political matters with his American friends and acquaintances, including Trump Jr.

They further said the International Boxing Association itself did not pay for the wedding, while declining to comment on payments made through the Dubai-based entity identified in the ProPublica investigation.

Trump Jr.’s spokesperson did not dispute that Kremlev paid for parts of the celebrations.

Instead, the spokesperson described Kremlev as a personal friend of Donald Trump Jr. and said the two men met through a mutual friend in the hunting community.

The spokesperson said the two subsequently developed a friendship through their shared interests in boxing and outdoor activities.

Trump Jr. and his wife later confirmed Kremlev’s involvement themselves.

In a statement published by Bettina Trump after the ProPublica report, the couple said Kremlev had hosted two nights of celebrations for them and described the support as an exceptionally generous wedding gift from a friend.

They also rejected suggestions that the financial support should automatically be interpreted as politically motivated.

The couple said their relationship with Kremlev was personal and argued that friendship should not necessarily be interpreted through a political lens.

The clarification is significant because the ProPublica investigation does not establish that Kremlev paid for the wedding celebrations in exchange for political influence, government action or access to the U.S. administration.

Instead, the report raises questions about the potential implications of a wealthy Russian businessman with close connections to Putin providing such substantial financial support to the son of the sitting U.S. president.

National security experts quoted by ProPublica expressed concern about the arrangement and said large financial gifts can create opportunities for influence or access.

Those comments, however, are assessments by experts and do not establish that Kremlev or Trump Jr. entered into an improper political agreement.

The exact amount Kremlev spent has also not been publicly established.

ProPublica reported that the total was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Among the expenses was the rental of one of the private islands used during the celebrations. The island, where a reception was held and guests stayed, can reportedly cost around 100,000 dollars per night.

The fireworks company used for the celebration charges around 70,000 dollars for comparable displays, according to the investigation.

The wedding weekend itself began with a smaller family ceremony involving about 18 people, while the larger celebrations brought together additional friends and guests.

The presence of a sizable group of Russian guests also attracted attention among people attending the event.

According to ProPublica, some guests were surprised by the number of Russians present because Trump Jr. had previously characterized the wedding as a small and private gathering.

Among those reportedly present were individuals connected to Kremlev and the International Boxing Association.

ProPublica also reported that photographs and videos publicly released from the wedding have generally not prominently featured the Russian guests.

Kremlev’s relationship with Trump Jr. appears to have developed relatively recently, although Kremlev’s representatives say the two men first met several years ago.

Their relationship became more publicly visible in September 2025, when Trump Jr. appeared at an International Boxing Association event in Istanbul.

Trump Jr. participated in a panel discussion alongside Kremlev and other figures from the boxing world.

The latest revelations have renewed scrutiny of relationships between members of the Trump family and Russian individuals.

Trump Jr.’s previous contacts with Russians received major attention during the investigation into the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, particularly after his meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer and others who were presented as having information potentially damaging to Hillary Clinton.

However, there is no evidence in the current ProPublica investigation establishing that Kremlev’s financial support for the wedding was connected to that earlier episode.

There is also no evidence presented in the report establishing that Trump Jr. accepted the financial support in return for a political favor or government decision.

The central issue now is the unusual financial relationship itself and what it could mean given Kremlev’s background and his reported connections to Russian state institutions.

Kremlev’s representatives maintain that the relationship is personal and nonpolitical.

Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump have similarly characterized the arrangement as a friendship and a wedding gift.

At the same time, the financial involvement has prompted concerns from national security specialists and renewed questions about the potential for foreign individuals to develop relationships with members of the U.S. president’s family through large financial gifts.

The White House and the Russian government did not respond to ProPublica’s requests for comment, according to the investigation.

Jared Kushner, Trump Jr.’s brother-in-law, also did not respond to requests for comment. Kushner has been involved in U.S. negotiations concerning Russia and Ukraine.

The issue is therefore developing along two separate lines.

On one side, Trump Jr. and his wife acknowledge that Kremlev funded major parts of their post-wedding celebrations and insist that the support was a personal gift from a friend.

On the other, the financial arrangement has raised questions because of Kremlev’s position in international sports, his reported links to Russian state institutions and his relationship with President Vladimir Putin.

For now, the available evidence establishes that Kremlev helped finance substantial portions of Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas.

It does not establish that the payments were made to obtain political influence or that Trump Jr. provided anything to Kremlev in return.

The controversy is therefore centred on questions of transparency, foreign financial relationships and potential influence, rather than a proven political exchange.

As scrutiny continues, further information about the financial arrangements, the Dubai-based entity involved and the nature of Kremlev’s relationship with Trump Jr. could determine whether the issue develops into a wider political or congressional controversy.

For the moment, both sides maintain that the relationship was personal.

Kremlev’s representatives describe him as a friend of Trump Jr., while the couple themselves say his financial support was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift.

The revelations nevertheless place a renewed spotlight on the intersection of wealth, foreign influence, personal relationships and U.S. presidential politics.
