Iranian officials say the proposed zone will restrict vessels entering the designated area, with ships that violate the restrictions potentially facing sanctions. The announcement comes after U.S. forces struck three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for Iranian missile attacks targeting U.S. warships, according to U.S. officials.
The United States has denied an Iranian claim that its forces successfully struck a U.S. military vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the conflicting accounts surrounding the latest maritime confrontations.
The growing tensions are also affecting global energy markets. Brent crude rose to about $97 a barrel on Monday, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed above $92, as concerns grew that disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait could continue.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy corridors, making any prolonged disruption there a potential threat to global oil supplies and prices.
